Rock to Riches and Angat Pilipinas Coalition’s Burn Gutierrez dishes out important love advice for the young at heart.

(Note: This is an excerpt from Burn Gutierrez’s talk at the recently held #eCMRealTalk, the first of a financial literacy series held in partnership with Kamuning Bakery Cafe’s Pandesal Forum. Slight modifications have been made by the editors.)

Burn-Gutierrez

My wife and I have always been budget-conscious even back when we were still dating.

She lived in Marikina, so all our dates were set in Marikina Riverbanks—at the park, because SM [Marikina] wasn’t there yet.

I was an audit professional pero napakaliit ng sweldo noong panahon na iyon.

Every summer, we would share this meal sa may paligid ng Riverbanks. This was just about P10 pesos at the time.

1. Eating out

Based on my research, sa P1,000 pwede na kayong mag-date sa isang restaurant. May iba’t-ibang klase ng restaurant, depende iyan sayong kakayanan. Imagine kung kada-kinsenas, kada-sweldo mag-de-date kayo. Sa isang taon, P25,000 ang magagastos mo sa iyong pakikipag-date.

That is, P1,000 every payday in hoping for your forever.

2. Flowers

You will spend around P10,000 in six months kung mabilis mo siyang mapapasagot.

Iyan ay nasa P500 to P1,500.

Pwede kang mag-jeep, pwede kang mag-taxi.

You have to shell out cash para sa pamasahe para mapuntahan mo ang mahal mo.

5. What about your salary?

Determine how much your suweldo is and then estimate your courting expenses. Check your proportion income, i-adjust mo ang panliligaw expense mo. Spend only according to what you can afford.

6. And then, there’s heartbreak…

The cost of heartbreak is $75 billion per year.

If you’re going through a heartbreak, dapat alam mong i-handle ang sitwasyong ganito.

Sabi nga nila, “Time can heal a broken heart.” Pero hindi pala totoo iyon. Time alone does not heal.

Meron ako naging girlfriend noon, iniwan ako at nag-puntang US. Two years na hindi ko alam kung anong ginagawa ko sa trabaho ko. First time kong magtrabaho as an auditor.

It’s a choice.
