After a long journey to the recent 2015 Fiba Asia Champion, Gilas Pilipinas is finally back to the Philippines. They may have fallen short of their goal to win the Asian championship and earn a ticket to next year’s Olympics in Rio De Janeiro, they will always be the champion to our fellow Filipinos. They did win our heart, as well as the whole world who watched the said event.

China doesn’t play fair. It’s like I’m watching a cooking show rather than a basketball action. But, overall I’m so proud of our country’s representative to FIBA 2016. Honestly, I don’t expect them to go this far, but with sacrificed, hard work, and playing with all their heart “puso”, they reach the unexpected.

For Gilas, you will always be the hero in our heart. :)

With the recent 16th Fiba Asia Championship, China takes away the gold medal, by defeating our own hard fighting Gilas Pilipinas.

There’s this huge debate that China’s success could be associated to few things connected to them being the host country. For an obvious reason, China enjoyed many advantages all through the entire tournament which contributed to their success.
But, before the said championship match up between China and Philippines, there were reports that our representative Gilas Pilipinas is a victim of unfair treatment by the Chinese local event organizers.

    1. The bus arrived late in picking up the team from the hotel, leading to a reduction in Gilas’ warm-up time.
    2. When Gilas were about to practice the coliseum’s maintenance staff fix the net of the goal, which lead to further delay.

But, could China still won the Gold even without those unfavorable referee calls and filthy techniques on Gilas? For me, it’s a yes. Why?

The game might seem like a cooking show, but let’s give some credit to China. They played an outstanding game especially on the area of defense. Gilas, clearly giving a chivalrous stand until the final buzzer although, didn’t have its best game of the tournament in the gold medal match.

But it wasn’t so much what Gilas did not do. The stats assessment showed that both teams were pretty even in their performance that game. With tight and aggressive pressure defense of Chinese players, Gilas had faced rough times penetrating the game. They contested every shot of our National team and they hardly make a point. Jayson Castro, who was simply called in the All- Superstar Five of the tournament, succeeded in defeating his man along with his quick penetrations but still could not make a decent shot because of China’s excellent help defense and defensive stops.

Moreover, it wasn’t simply the Chinese tight defense that worked miracles in the game. They also displayed exceptional fluidity in its offense also. They were very patient, and rarely took forced shots. The ball was continuously being passed around, making Gilas’ defense work double time. Very rarely did we see the ball staying in just one spot for more than two seconds. They also showcased good shooting skills.

Despite of our lost, we take our hats off to Gilas Pilipinas for working hard and showing a great effort to bring honor to the Philippines even in the face of huge odds in China. It was indeed a performance worth praising for and admiration of our entire country.
